HTC RE, a Standalone Camera Device For $200

HTC, in addition to its newly announced Desire Eye smartphone, also unveiled a new device and a weird looking or cute looking (depends on how you look at it) standalone camera called the HTC Re. It's a new camera device which is very unique in so many ways.

First of all the RE sports a 16MP camera which is also capable of recording videos with 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second rate or a slow motion clip with 720p resolution at 120 frames per second. The RE's design will immediately tell you that there is no display or viewfinder to review captured photos and videos with and that is I think every camera nowadays should at least have. But thanks to its companion app that you can download and install on your smartphone which helps you view those stills and videos when the Re camera is paired with the smartphone via bluetooth or WiFi direct.

The HTC RE features a fixed focus lens and users can capture video clips and images with the 146-degree field of view. Another unique feature this device has or has not is that it does not have a power button which HTC means that the RE will automatically turn on when picked up. If it does not turn on for some reason like when you wear gloves or something, you can hit the capture button to wake the camera.

Although it can be paired with Android 4.3 and up and iOS 7 and up smartphones, it does not necessary need to be connected with one all the time as it has an 8GB internal storage where the files can be saved in and then users can just do the transfer and sharing at a different time. MicroSD card is also compatible with the RE and that's up to 128GB.

It can be used underwater no deeper than one meter and no longer than 30 minutes. Plus the RE camera also comes with a number of accessories to make it more comfortable to use. Other connectivity options that come with the HTC RE are Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi and WiFi Direct, 5-pin micro USB, the microSD card slot and a tripod hole. And what about the battery? HTC said there is an 820mAh rechargeable one which is capable of shooting 1,200 photos with 16MP each and record a video up to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
