I Just Got My Own Google Cardboard, Here's What I Say

Google Cardboard is Google's take on the now-becoming-popular virtual reality technology and it's main goal is to bring this type of technology to many users around the world without costing them an arm and a leg. Since most of the time, when a technology is new it is most likely expensive, and that's what Google is trying to address with the creation of Cardboard when it was formally unveiled a couple of years ago. I am one of those tech lovers who really wanted to try this new amazing form of entertainment. Thankfully I won't be needing to order one from international online stores, so I got mine from Abubot.ph, and let me share you my experience from this site and my experience using the Cardboard itself.

Virtual Reality technology is now one of the most talked about and most anticipated gadgets of tech and game enthusiasts around the world. You will know that it's already gaining momentum when gadget makers are already creating their own VR offering like Samsung and HTC and more and more gadget reviewers are starting receiving demo units and publishing reviews online.

Just in case you missed it, I have already tried an actual Oculus Rift a few weeks back when there was a demo unit for public at this year's Livex 2015 conference at SM Lanang here in Davao, this is a good thing since I have something this Google Cardboard to compare with.

First off let me tell you how my order went with Abubot.ph. This Pinoy online store has a tag line that says "Ang Geek Shop ng Bayan." Pinoy na Pinoy diba? From that tagline you'll already know what they offer, accessories, toys, shirts and many geek-related stuff. Something geek shoppers really like, I know because apart from myself I also have a lot of friends who share the same passion with me. I told them about this particular site and they also liked it and will definitely place orders in the future. Folks' goal over at Abubot "is to source out geek-related toys, memorabilia, collectibles and gadgets so that our users don't have to. " That's exactly what I saw when I first visited their website.

I am not really a fan of online shopping, especially here in the Philippines due to a number of not-so-good reasons. I actually made another online order from another famous local site because the unit is exclusively sold through them, since I needed it and had no other option I did it. I placed the order and to make the story short, the experience was not that acceptable. When I ordered from Abubot, I was actually thinking the same (or as always). But to my surprise, it was actually a very smooth transaction and most of all the item arrived way earlier than I expected since I live in Davao City and the package was coming from Manila. I was told both by the store and their official courtier that my package would arrive about a week from the the time I placed the order, but two days after, it showed up at our doorstep. That's a kudos to Abubot.ph for a job well done. Nothing would really make an online purchaser happier than having their order right in front of them so earlier than what was promised. I am pretty sure a lot of you guys would agree.

So I got the Google Cardboard, I opened it up and assembled it myself. I am not really good at putting things together, but what's nice about it is the package comes with a printed manual on how to assemble it. It's very easy to follow and you will know which end needs to connect to which part. See the photos below.

The two lenses are placed in between this part of the Cardboad. Good thing is the lenses perfectly fit in those holes and they can even hold up on their own

These are the things that will greet you when you unpack the Cardboard. They look pretty intimidating especially for people who are not good at assembling things like me. But I tell you, these are very easy to place together due to having the guide and the as you can see every hole and connecting parts are labeled or numbered which tell which part should be connected to which end. : )

Another thing I like about this version of Google Cardboard from Abubot.ph is the inclusion of headstrap, so our hands won't get tired holding the device to our eyes while enjoying the cardboard or playing interactive games.

The elastic band is included in the package with the Cardboard, I used it to hold the whole thing together to examine if I placed everything correctly before taping the whole device

If there is one thing I really don't like about the Google Cardboard, that would be because it is made out of cardboard and if you have a sweaty or oily face, R.I.P. to the cardboard then. So to deal with this, I put scotch tape on every part that touches my face. If Abubot.ph can make this thing's surface something like liquid proof/resistant like those we see from fastfood restaurants, it would be a lot nicer. But overall, it's affordable, easy to assemble to ready to give you access to the virtual reality world in no time.

Some of the reasons I can say why we should buy this kind of device while waiting for the more advanced Oculus Rift, is that it's already available for purchase, very cheap in terms of price and a lot of Cardbaord VR apps are already available on Google Play to download. It is also available on iOS, but since I am an Android user, I can definitely say that Google Play has already a lot to offer with this Cardboard. Below are some of the best VR apps I have used and been using.

  • Titans of Space

  • Roller Coaster VR

  • Chair in a Room

  • Sisters

  • War of Words VR

  • Cosmic Roller Coaster

When it comes to being so immersive, this VR Cardboard by Google is able to deliver the same experience I had when I tried the Oculus Rift a couple of weeks back. I have yet to try gaming VR apps, so if you can suggest some for me, I will appreciate it. And when I finally tried some, I will write another post sharing you my experience.

As of writing this Google Cardboard is still available for order from Abubot.ph. Check out their site and see what other things you may like and/or follow them on Facebook to get future updates directly from this amazing Pinoy geek store.
