OPPO F3 Plus Unboxing and Initial Impressions

On March 23, 2017, OPPO Philippines fulfilled their promise that they would announce the next Selfie Expert smartphone which will be a direct follow up to last year's massively successful F1s phone - the OPPO F3 Plus was officially launched in the country. Right now, interested buyers can pre-order the device from Lazada with exclusive freebies worth Php2,000 until March 31 before hitting store shelves on April 1. But before the month ends and since OPPO sent us a review unit, we would like to share to you my unboxing and initial impressions of this brand new OPPO F3 Plus.

Similar to the previous F series of smartphones from OPPO, the F3 Plus has an outside appearance that mostly remains the same. Of course there are some slight improvements in design aspect of the phone, but the overall looks and even feel reminds me of the last OPPO device I reviewed which was the F1s. However, I would say that this OPPO F3 Plus is definitely more beautiful than its predecessors both on the outside and on the inside. It's bigger as you may have already know, coming in at 6-inch screen size with 1080p display resolution, the edges are more rounded, built is more solid, and in addition to the original gold color, there is now one in black which looks very gorgeous.

What's in the Box

Upon lifting the outside cover of the box, I was immediately greeted by the unit itself sporting a huge 6-inch screen size with noticeable thin bezels on both sides. The F3 Plus device has its own cardboard casing that I needed to remove from the inside boxing to reveal the other accessories. And then just beneath the unit, also in its casing, is where the SIM card ejecting tool is found which is designed similar to the O in OPPO name (see below). I hope I won't lose it.

There's the wall charger that is equipped with OPPO's own fast charging technology called VOOC paired with USB-to-MicroUSB charging cable, a pair of in-ear earphones, user guide and warranty papers were also in the box. Like the OPPO F1s, this one here also comes with free screen protector which is already installed on the unit, and a free clear silicon case. So if you are a type of user who does not like using a phone without a casing or screen protector, that is not going to be an issue here. Usually it is hard to find a perfectly fitting screen protector and casing for latest phones and sometimes you would need to wait for at least a couple of weeks before seeing ones. So I think it is one of those efforts from OPPO that I really appreciate.

The aluminum back panel of the OPPO F3 Plus now looks more clean to me than the F1s' where the upper and lower parts of the back cover sport different metal finish giving us two different surface texture on the rear. The OPPO F3 Plus now shows one finish from top to bottom, then now have two three-string antenna bands for better signal reception. Camera on this side of the phone sports 16MP with autofocus, dual-tone LED flash and a f/1.7 aperture lens which captures really nice photos and works really well even in low light scenes, plus it now records up to 4K video clips. And then there is the OPPO branding sitting almost at the center.

On the front face is where the main highlights of this smartphone are found. The two cameras which are pegged at 16MP for the main shooter and 8MP for the second one. Unlike other dual-camera equipped phones in the wild, these two here does not really work together in a sense to provide much better selfie photos and videos, they work independently giving users two different format of photos in very good quality - regular and wide-angled. For example, the main 16MP camera works just like a normal Selfie Expert shooter with all the functionalities it has such as the Beauty Mode and Auto Mode, but if you want to have a much larger background or make sure that everyone is included in a "groufie" photo, you may need to switch to the secondary 8MP camera as it has a 120-degree wide angle lens where its effect is similar to an action camera. See image samples below using these two cameras.

LEFT: 16MP Front Camera, RIGHT: 8MP Front Camera with 120-Degree Wide Angle Lens
Both of the photos above were shot using the two selfie cameras in Beauty mode so that I could get more nice looking skin texture and color. hehehe. I thought I had already captured group photos with my friends from Davao Bloggers Society that I can show in this post, but for some reason I hadn't. I will try to include that in my full review of this device. But as you can see in my selfie photos above, the quality of the photos almost remained the same even though 16MP and 8MP shooters were used.

You may click on the images to enlarge and see more option details for each of the modes.

Below are some of the photos I have taken using the OPPO F3 Plus' main camera.

Going back to the front panel, the OPPO F3 Plus is the biggest Selfie Expert to date measuring 6 inches. The F1s only had 5.5" HD (720p) resolution, but the F3 Plus is much much bigger, brighter, the display is more vivid than ever, thanks to the 1080p resolution. Its entire front panel is protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 5 with 2.5D curved glass. Then the home button also houses the Fingerprint Scanner function that works really fast, you can register multiple fingerprints too. It is also important to note that the home button is no longer clickable like it used to, now you just "soft touch" it to work or to unlock the phone using your fingerprint. A single tap will bring you back to the home screen, tap and hold will activate Google Assistant. Also, sitting next to the button are the multitasking and back lit keys.

The Power key is located on the right side of the phone together with the dual-SIM card holder. OPPO F3 Plus supports nano SIM card. This can also hold microSD card up to 256GB in case the default 64GB (51GB available to user) storage is not enough. However, the device does not have a dedicated microSD card slot anymore, instead the second SIM slot doubles as the microSD card holder. In other other words, either you have two SIM cards running at the same time or one SIM and one microSD card.

On the other side of the device is where the volume rocker keys are located. Then go down to the bottom and there we can find the 3.5mm earphone jack, the microUSB port, microphone, and the 6-hole speaker. The speaker works very clear and loud.

Software wise, the interface of OPPO F3 Plus remains the same which looks closer to the iOS platform than Android skin. It runs on OPPO's own user interface called ColorOS 3.0 and is based on Android Marshmallow mobile operating system. This may already sound a bit old OS for you, as most flagship smartphones today run on Android 7.0 Nougat already, but my experience so far with OPPO F3 Plus has been smooth and I haven't encountered any issues yet. Of course an Androud 7.0 Nougat would be much appreciated though. The animation is very smooth, solid, and fast and the display quality is most pleasing to the eyes, thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor, Adreno 510 GPU and 4GB of RAM.

On the battery side, it carries a huge 4000mAh battery which is always keeping the smartphone powered almost the entire day depending on usage. And speaking of the battery size, it's quite big actually and usually big-sized batteries tend to make the phone thicker too, but thankfully OPPO managed to make the F3 Plus thinner at only 7.35mm. And last but not least, it is equipped with VOOC Flash Charge technology. The first time I charged the phone, I started at 9% and it went 100% in just more than 90 minutes. One of the fastest chargers I have ever used.
