Just Got the New 1-Peso Coin That Commemorates Rizal's 150th Birthday

For some reason I did not know that there's this newly-issued Philippine peso coin that was released in 2011 to commemorate Jose Rizal's 150th birthday. 1861-2011. It did not come to my attention until I saw one just this morning in my coin purse along with the old-but-current coins in circulation.

If you have seen one of this new coin, you may have noticed that it has the same size and weight as the current Piso around and that makes it not that noticeable when mixed with other one-peso coins. Like I mentioned above this version of piso has been out since 2011 so I am now thinking that I should've seen one since then but failed to recognize one until today.

According to SunStar.com.ph report in December 2011, the government would produce around 10 million pieces of this coin. There was also a report I heard from the Kapuso network that the Philippine government will replace the current coins we have in the wild with a set of new designs in the next years, so this means that this new piso coin I encountered today is just the beginning.

What do you think of the new design?
