300: Rise of an Empire Trailer First Impressions

This is one of the follow up films I have been waiting for since it was announced that Frank Miller, creator of the 300 graphic novel, was already making a sequel for the novel and the movie 300. This week Warner Bros. just released the first trailer for the 300: Rise of an Empire which is according to reports is based on Frank Miller's upcoming graphic novel entitled "Xerxes" and is set to be released worldwide in March of 2014. That is 7 years of waiting from the original release date of the 300 or maybe 6 since the announcement that the sequel was already in the works was in 2008 as per Wikipedia, so you can really understand the excitement and anticipation of fans around the world about this new movie and that's including me.

It was on June 12, Manila time when Warner Bros. via 300 official Facebook page unveiled the new theatrical poster plus announced that the trailer for the new film would be released the next day. To make the story short I waited for the said trailer and saw it as soon it was published online.

I was very excited to see how it would look like and what scenes were going to be shown in the mini clip. I wondered if this would be able to offer the same feeling as the the first one did.  To be honest, while the trailer is great and has so many similarities with the 300 like the visual style, slow motions, screams and blood etc, I was not as impressed as with the previous film. Like may have said, this movie is not going to be the same without Leonidas and his Spartan men which I agree on and maybe that is the reason why I expected too much on the trailer.

What I don't like.

1. Noam Murro, the director, was not mentioned in the trailer. Instead it mentions Zack Snyder the director of the prequel. I know that Mr. Snyder is one of the producers of this film and has some hands on how this movie would be rendered which should be similar to the first one especially the visuals. But I still believe that the current director should be mentioned too even if it is a first clip.

2. When I saw the trailer for the 300 back in 2007 for the very first time, I knew right then and  there that Gerard Butler or King Leonidas was the main character but in this one, I got a little bit confused.

3. It is too CGI-ied. It feels great to look at the trailer as it reminds me more of the original movie. But most of the scenes, to me, are just too computerized and kinda heavy.

4. Spartan or Athenian warriors looks are not that impressive compared to the Spartans of 300. I saw one of the comments on its YouTube page that said the men (soldiers) in this movie are not that hot unlike Leonidas' men.

5. Scripts. The lines showcased in the trailer were not as powerful as the ones we hear in the 300. There was no "Tonight we dine in hell!" and "This is Sparta!" effect.

What I like.

1. It lives up to Zack Snyder's 300. It was reported that Snyder was still looking over the production of this one while he films Man of Steel. And people behind this film was given instructions that the visual theme should be the same as the first one and yes I can see it was followed.

2. More than 2 minutes. I like it that they released a more than 2 minute long trailer instead of around a little over a minute. Most teaser trailers I have seen were rarely 2 minutes

3.  One of the warriors jumps off the cliff and then slashes down a Persian at the boat he landed on. That is just epic!

I think it is because they are trying to give us a wider overview of what we can expect to see in the whole picture. Hopefully they will release additional trailers in the future that focus more on some details especially on Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) the lead character.

I understand that it is just a trailer and is one of the ones that we are going to see as we approach March 2014 and that trailers usually don't represent the whole movie. I just wanted to share what I think about it and I hope and pray that the movie itself is going to be much more than what every fan is expecting and going to be a blockbuster too just like what the 300 did.

Below I embedded the two trailers for Zack Snyder's 300 and Noam Murro's 300: Rise of an Empire and let us know what you think about it through the comments section below.
