Acer Liquid S2 Unveiled, First Phablet Capable of 4K Video Recording

The Taiwanese company Acer will now offer a phablet device by the name of Acer Liquid S2 with the 4K video recording capabilities which the firm claims to be the first handheld device to sport 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) resolution video. Acer announced its new phablet Android device ahead of the upcoming IFA 2013 tech event to be held in Berlin this month, just like what LG did with their G Pad 8.3 tablet. Read on for more details after the jump.

The Liquid S2 measures 6 inches diagonally with 1080x1920 full HD IPS Display and a pixel density of 338ppi (pixel per inch). This beast will be running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Inside it will be a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. As for cameras, the phablet will have a 13-megapixel snapper with LED ring flash on the back paired with a 2MP lens on the front face which is said to be capable of 1080p recording. All of that to be supported by a 3,300mAh battery. There's also 4G LTE support.

What is a 4K video? This is simply a new term for a new quality of picture just like Standard Definition or SD to High Definition or HD, 4K video quality is four times of HD's. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III and Sony Xperia Z1 are also reported to offer this feature when they are officially announced.

This Acer device has a feature, though not the first one of its kind, called "Quick First Shot" which allows users to take pictures right from the unlock screen. According to, Liquid S2 will be able to capture videos and record it in 4K resolution, however it won't be able to play them using the same device so a user may need to connect it to a 4K TV to playback the recorded clip.

As per reports across tech blogs, this Acer Liquid S1 successor will only come in 16GB variant and we can imagine how much space a 4K video can eat up, around 100mb per minute of video according to one blog I read which I could not find anymore for some reason. But thanks to its microSD slot that can support up to 128GB. That is so massive, I don't really even know if a 128GB is already on the market. So it really obvious that Acer wants to have its own space in the Android and iOS race which is currently being dominated by Samsung and Apple.

The Acer Liquid S2 will be available in black and red colors before October ends. Pricing is yet to be announced.
