Apple Officially Unveils iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus With Biggest Displays Ever

Customers around the globe have been wanting and waiting for this moment to arrive and it's finally here. Apple has officially unveiled the biggest and thinnest iPhone devices ever made since its first appearance about 7 years ago. Yes that is right, you read "devices" which means not only one iPhone was announced but two and both are sporting more than 4 inches of screen size. Tim Cook, Apple CEO earlier today took the wraps off its new iOS 8-powered smartphones and these are the iPhone 6 which boasts a 4.7" display and iPhone 6 Plus that has the biggest one at 5.5 inches. And it is not just the sizes that were changed and improved here, there are a lot of things going on on these devices.

As what had been happening in the last several weeks or months, so may rumors and leaks that bombarded the tech world about these Apple made devices. Many of them were proven to be accurate and many were just not real after all. For example speculations suggested that the 4.7" one would be named iPhone 6 (which is right and highly likely) and then the bigger twin would be called iPhone 6 Air or iPhone 6L which of course is not the case when it was unveiled. But that does not really matter, what matters the most is that Apple bumped the screen sizes up to 4.7" and 5.5" which was the same thing rumors suggested. And yeah I am pretty sure I am not the only one who is happy about it, especially those who have been using iPhones and constantly upgrading to newer version of the iOS device.

One other major change we can see on these new smartphones is their physical design which features curved glass screen around the bezels and the edges which are now rounded ones, very similar to iPad and iTouch devices. So that is a big step away from the looks of iPhone 4 until iPhone 5s where edges are kind of sharp and solid in feel. The power and lock button was even removed from the top right down to its right side. In terms of dimensions, as expected, these new iPhones are thinner but heavier than the iPhone 5s. The 5s is 7.6mm thick, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are at 6.9mm and 7.1mm respectively. iPhone 5s is as heavy as 112g but these two are pegged at 129g (iPhone 6) and 172g (iPhone 6 Plus) which is very understandable since the display and battery sizes were increased.

Now for the display aspect of these new Apple smartphones, rumors were saying that Apple would use a sapphire display cover for this new generation of iPhones but that turned out to be incorrect, instead the company used "ion-strengthened" glass with an improved polarizer to provide the best viewing experience especially in outdoor environment. Although both devices feature Retina HD display as what Apple calls it, their resolution are not the same. The iPhone 6 has 1334x750 resolution with a total of 326 pixels per inch across the 4.7-inch screen and iPhone 6 Plus has the highest one at 1920x1080 resolution with 401ppi. The company also said that these phones can now feature more information when held on a landscape mode or position and that includes the home screen, which I think is very new to the iPhone world. And then of course the fingerprint scanner feature of Touch ID is still present in the device through its home button key.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are both powered an a new 64-bit A8 processor which Apple claims to sport  25% faster CPU and about 50% faster graphics and more energy efficient than iPhone 5s' A7 chip.  Last year there was the M7 coprocessor introduced with the 5s and this year it is still here in 6 and 6 Plus which is now the M8 coprocessor and its function it to measure data from compass, accelerometer, and gyroscope, along with a barometer.

Cameras of the device remain at 8MP configuration but definitely have a lot of improvements to provide better picture and video quality.  One of those is what Apple calls "Focus Pixels" which means the lens will be able to focus twice as fast as the camera on iPhone 5s. Cameras are also enhanced with image stabilization technology so users will not have to worry about ending up with blurry photos. The company also claims these cameras to perform well in low light environment.

Burst Selfies is another feature that is onboard the devices, how does it work? The name says it, users will be able to capture multiple photos at one fire using the front facing camera. That sounds very cool to selfie people. Continuous Autofocus is another good thing about the camera, where it continues to autofcous even while users move.  HDR mode is now available in video format and users can also record in slo-mo mode with up to 240fps.  Time-lapse video format is also another mode in the camera.

What about the batteries? Well just as usual, Apple did not disclose how big the batteries are going to be in these two iPhones but promised them to last longer and more power efficient even though displays are sharpier and bigger. For example, Apple said that the iPhone 6 Plus should last up to 24 hours over 3G network and up to 12hours on LTE and WiFi connections and then the iPhone 6 for about 14 hours on 3G and 10 to 11 hours on LTE and WiFi. For video and audio playback the iPhone 6 should last up to 11 and 50 hours respectively while the iPhone 6 Plus up to 14 and 80 hours for video and audio.

Pricing and availability? Local pricing and availability are of course not mentioned yet but the pricing you see below are for US consumers. In the US every carrier will sell these devices under the same pricing roof with lock-in contract attached to it. However in the Philippines, just like the previous iPhones that were brought and sold here by Smart and Globe, these two here will most likely be priced differently and also arrive a bit late. Iin the US as early as Sept 12 they can pre-order the devices and but at stores starting September 19.
