Just in case you have been living under a rock, Samsung Electronics has just officially launched their new flagship smartphones for the year, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. There are features that were first introduced with the Galaxy S5 but were for some reason removed from last year's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, that are now returning with the S7 and S7 Edge. Those are the microSD card support and waterproof capability, many consumers did not like Samsung's move with the S6 devices and good thing they really do listen to their customers and they decided to bring them back on board for this year's flagships. Plus, a lot of cool stuff and added features are on these seventh Galaxy S installment and I will be more than happy to share them to you below.

Samsung held the global launch of the Galaxy S7 Edge and S7 in Barcelona, Spain at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016. And coinciding with that international event, Samsung Philippines also had a local event held at the Samsung Hall at SM Aura. Apart from these two smartphones, Samsung Philippines also formally and locally launched the Gear VR a virtual reality headset and attendees were also given a sneak peek of the premium Gear S2 smartwatch in Platinum and Rose Gold finish.

IP68 Water and Dust Resistant Certification

Exceedingly durable and designed to function even in unfavorable conditions, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are cap-less, water and dust resistant with an IP68 certification to boot, ensuring that it could survive getting wet in the rain or being accidentally dropped into the pool, withstanding being submerged in 1.5 meters of water for half an hour. Not only that, it is also dust-tight, meaning it is safe from the ingress of solid foreign objects like sand, dust, or soil. With this, users can now be worry free from spills, dust, or accidental drops in water.

DSLR-like Real Pixel Camera

Setting new benchmarks for smartphone photography, Samsung outdid itself with the Galaxy S7 Edge and S7's new technology in its camera department and they call it the Dual-Pixel. This Dual-Pixel camera uses a dual photodiode technology, originally used in professional DSLR cameras and has now been adopted for the very first time  in smartphones. This technology enables even faster Auto Focus for crisp, strikingly clear pictures. Just as a person focuses on an object with both eyes, every pixel has two photodiodes to enable superfast focus, while larger pixels and the brighter F1.7 lens allow bright photos to be taken even in low-light conditions. Added to this is a front camera with brighter F1.7 lens capable of turning the screen as a flash that allows selfies to be taken even in poorly-lit scenes.

Complementing these, Samsung has taken its camera's fun features up several notches. There is the Motion Panorama feature to capture action-packed and fun moments by bringing panoramic shots to life. The Hyperlapse functionality has been upgraded to make small time-compressed videos easier to create and share. Moreover, the well-loved Beauty Mode has also been further enhanced with the Spotlight feature to capture faces with the effect of natural light.

Memory Card Support, Bigger Battery and Fast Charge

Again, the microSD card support was missing at last year's iteration of Galaxy S series of devices and Samsung is bringing them back this year. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will be available in the Philippines with base memory of 32GB with microSD card support of up to 200GB, that's plenty of space for music, files, photos and videos.

To support what these devices sport and offer, Samsung made their battery packs bigger. The Galaxy S7 now equipped with 3,000mAh while with dual-edged Galaxy S7 Edge has 3,600mAh. Both of these handsets support wired Ultra Fast Charging technology as well as wireless charging capability. Samsung claims charging time in these phone are faster than the previous ones.

Design, Display, and Software

Building on Samsung's re-imagined design philosophy in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the S7 and S7 Edge's elegant yet functional design features a streamlined body of glass and metal finish, with ergonomic curves to easily fit the user's grip. The Galaxy S7 offers a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 2560 x 1440 resolution, the Galaxy S7 Edge has a much bigger 5.5-inch (dual edge) Quad HD Super AMOLED display.

Samsung gives new meaning to functional design. The S7 Edge comes with various edge panels which can be selected by simply tapping an icon. Swiping the edge screen and different edge panel options will pop out. The App Edge panel appears with the user's favorite apps, the People Edge panel pops out with user's favorite contacts, and the new Task Edge shows task apps and features users usually use. What's more is both devices are running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the company's TouchWiz UI.
