LG G5 Formally Announced at Mobile World Congress 2016

Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain is a big tech event mostly for smartphones enthusiasts. This is where we hear big announcements from smartphone and electronics companies like Samsung, LG, Xiaomi etc. Samsung kicked off the MWC 2016 a couple of days ago during its Unpacked event where they officially launched their Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices. LG was also one of the early attention-grabbers during this year's MWC as they also formally announced their next flagship offering, the LG G5, and it's not alone.

Unlike Samsung which latest flagship offerings' design is not so far from the previous S6 and S6 Edge, LG G5 sports a completely redesigned aesthetics, front and back. Now sporting all-metal unibody casing, and even though the G5 has unibody housing, its battery is still removable thanks to its removable bottom. Not only that, LG is also introducing a modular concept with this G5 as the company also announced a couple of accessories for this device which they call "Friends" to enhance more of its functionalities like the camera, battery, audio and more. These Friends are attached through what LG is calling is "Magic Slot" or the removable bottom part.

To be honest, I like the LG G4's design more compared to this G5 however a lot of gadget enthusiasts around the world are praising this smartphone for its new look, materials and feel. I guess I will also like it better when I see this device in real life and personally hold it to my hands.

The LG G5 is also introducing a new display feature that was first released with the LG V10, the "Always-On". It sits in the upper part of the screen to display other important and quick details like time and notifications. Samsung Galaxy S7 devices are also having this feature of their own. LG said this Always-On functionality does not eat so much battery life as they have created a technology where this particular feature won't need the use of application processor, thus making the energy consumption very minimal. How minimal? According to the Korean electronics company, about 0.8% of battery every hour. Speaking of battery, the LG G5 has 2,800mAh right out of the box.

Another exciting feature LG us bringing with the G5 is the implementation of dual-rear cameras, one in 16MP and another with 8MP. Yes, both on the back panel. The 16MP is going to work as the main camera taking high resolution photos, however the second 8MP one will work together with the main shooter to capture more details through its 135-degree wide-angle lens. LG wants users to capture more information and details using the back camera without the need to use the panorama, this is best for taking photos of nature like mountains and beaches and even city images.

Powering this LG G5 is the newest and monster octa-core Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. internal storage will only offer 32GB right off the bat, but a microSD card can still be used with this smartphone and LG said that this phone can handle up to 2TB size of memory card.

As you can see in the image above, the bottom part of the LG G5 is removable, this is the Magic Slot. And through here you can connect modules to the G5. Depending on how the market will accept this particular feature, will determine third-party developers to create their own accessories for the G5 smartphone.

Good thing is, LG also unveiled a couple of LG Friends to try out with the device. There is the LG Cam Plus, which when attached gives additional camera-related functionalities like buttons and better grip while taking photos and most of all additional battery life of 1,200mAh making it to a total of 4000mAh. Another thing is the LG Hi-Fi Pro, this was created in partnership with B&O Play and it will provide much better audio quality for music and video playback. If you love taking 360-degree videos, there's the LG 360 Cam. But this is wirelessly connected to the G5, it allows you to capture 360 videos via its two 13MP cameras that sit back to back. LG 360 Cam is compatible with YouTube 360 video and Google Street View, I am not sure if Facebook 360 video is also supported. Last but not least is the LG 360 VR, this is LG's own take on virtual reality genre. But unlike many other VR headsets that we see, the LG 360 VR does not require you to slide your phone in it and uses it as the display panel, LG 360 VR is connected to your device via USB.
