PLDT and SMART Enhance Data Connectivity at General Santos International Airport

In an effort to further boost connectivity and as also part of the phase one nationwide rollout of carrier-grade Smart WiFi in key transport hubs in the whole of Philippines, PLDT and Smart have just recently installed high speed internet at the General Santos City International Airport. This is to serve the ever increasing demand for mobile data connectivity among the local and foreign travelers in the city.

Smart has allocated almost one billion pesos just this year for the rollout of Smart WiFi in public spots all over the Philippines to address consumer demand for high-speed internet as more and more Filipinos embrace the digital lifestyle. These installations are done in transport hubs such as airports, seaports, and mass-transportation systems nationwide and that includes MRT and LRT stations in Metro Manila.

So far the Smart WiFi is currently available in the following airports.
  • Francisco Bangoy International Airport aka Davao City International Airport
  • Laguindingan Airport  (Misamis Oriental)
  • Bacolod-Silay International Airport (Silay City)
  • Ilo-ilo International Airport (Ilo-ilo City)
  • Roxas Airport (Roxas City)
  • Zamboanga Airport (Zamboanga City)
  • Clark International Airport (Mabalacat, Pampanga)
  • Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport (Negros Oriental)
  • Laoag International Airport (Laoag City)
And then in the very near future, the Smart WiFi will also be deployed in four terminals of Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Airports in Caticlan, Palawan, Bohol, Cebu, and Kalibo will follow suit.

"More Filipinos are making the digital shift. With a backhaul of up to 1 gigabit per second, Smart WiFi users in General Santos International Airport will have seamless digital experience whether surfing the web for their favorite sites, or keeping connected with home and office while traveling. With out suite of digital content and relevant services, waiting at the airport is now enjoyable and productive," said Kat Luna-Abelarde, FVP and Wireless Consumer Operations Head at Smart.

"The deployment of carrier-grade Smart WiFi in 24 key transport hubs, including General Santos International Airport, is our answer to the government's call and the public's clamor for more WiFi hotspots in the country. It is also a strategic business move for PLDT group as this will help us understand and shape usage of the fast-growing data businesses," said Eric R. Alberto, EVP for PLDT/Smart, and President and CEO, ePLDT.

Thanks to Smart and PLDT for this fast action on implementing and improving the digital lifestyle of so many Filipino and foreign online consumers in the Philippines. With this, more and more traveling netizens will be able to connect to the vastness of the internet world wherever and whenever they are and enabling them to share their adventures and passions from different parts of the country at anytime of the day.
