Moto is Back in PH: Moto Z and Moto Z Play now in Philippines

Aside from Nokia, Motorola is another smartphone brand that I fell in love with during the dawn of cellular phones in the Philippines. In fact, I owned a Motorola device first before I was able to have my hands on a Nokia handset back in the day. And I can safely say that I am not the only one who really loved Motorola brand especially when the Razr series arrived in the local market. You were like the coolest kid in the block when you sport a Motorola Razr phone.

Sadly when Samsung and Apple started dominating the smartphone scene here and abroad, Motorola was one of the smartphone makers that became underrated and struggled in maintaining sales and market shares worldwide. Until the company was divided into two divisions, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility, the latter was later then acquired by Google where a number of Moto devices were released before it was eventually sold to Lenovo in 2014. It was during these time that Motorola's presence in the Philippines also became rare.

Now it's 2016 and after years of being away from the Philippine market, Moto is back with a punch unleashing two flagship smartphones with a twist. Moto Z, Moto Z Play and the optional add-on modules called Moto Mods are now officially released in the country through an event that was held a few days ago.

In terms of hierarchy, Moto Z is more high end than the Moto Z Play but both are compatible with the Moto Mods. Moto Mods are optional snap-on accessories that provides more functionalities to the devices, these are attached on to the back panel of the phones. This is the Moto's own take at the modular based smartphones that Google started with Project Ara. Modular phones are actually a very nice concept similar to personal computer industry where the company or any third party hardware manufacturers can develop different mods or modules with different functions for these type of handsets. And while Moto Mods' concept is actually nowhere near Google's Project Ara, these are actually the closest yet we can get to the modular smartphones many of us have been waiting for.

As of the moment, there are few Moto Mods ready to be purchased with any of these Moto Z devices. And these are the Incipio offGRID Power Bank, JBL Soundboost Speaker Mod, Moto Insta-Share Projector Mod, Hasselblad True Zoom Camera Mod, and Moto Style Shell Mods. Moto has even made the Developers Kit accessible to third-party software and hardware manufacturers to encourage them to create Mods for these and future devices.

Going back to the Moto Z and Moto Z Play, there are a few features and specs that each of these phones offer to the consumers. The two handsets both sport 5.5-inch screen size with the Moto Z being pegged with Quad-HD AMOLED display and Moto Z Play with Full HD Super AMOLED. Processor wise, the Moto Z has a monstrous Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM while the Moto Z Play is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 but instead of quad-core, it is sporting an eight-core processor partnered with 3GB of RAM.
