Five Things I Like About the OPPO F3 Plus

There is a new Selfie Expert in town, after the unexpected success of the OPPO F1s since August of last year, OPPO is following it up with another selfie-focused and much upgraded installment called the F3 Plus. Was there an F2 Plus, F2s or F3? No, apparently OPPO is not that particular in naming their devices. They skip or simply change the name from one device to another. So for this year we have this F3 Plus that promises to take our selfie taking experience to the next level.

So far I have already posted my unboxing and initial impressions of this Chinese-made smartphone on this blog which you can check out and see what's in the box with the unit. My review is also coming up, but for now let me share you my top five favorites on this dual-front camera equipped Android Marshmallow handset.

5. Design

I think first in my top five here would be the overall design of the OPPO F3 Plus. Sure it looks similar to the iPhone 6/6s series as well as other F series of smartphones from OPPO like the F1s. But of course I cannot deny the fact that OPPO made some tweaking on its outside appearance to make it look and feel more premium than its predecessors. The back panel for example, OPPO has implemented six-string antenna lines on the back, three at the top and another three at the bottom. These are more than just designs, although it looks really better than the usual solid antenna line found on other devices, OPPO claims that this will also provide better signal reception for the phone. And yes, I have done making and receiving calls on this phone and so far I have never encountered any issues talking to other parties while on the line.

Also, I use this phone mostly for online browsing so having a constant cellular signal wherever I go is just as important. And thankfully I am always connected to the highest possible network connection available - 4G / LTE - all the time. Yes all the time ever since I got the phone with me, this may also have to do with the network provider itself but sometimes some devices are not really good at getting the available signal.

Another thing I like about the design is the chamfered and rounded edges of the F3 Plus. It's a huge phone coming in at 6 inches, and having these kind of edges really helps a lot in holding the phone more comfortably. And last but not last but not least, is the home key. There is still a physical home button sitting right below the screen, however it does not work the same way it did on previous OPPO devices anymore. What I mean is, you cannot press down this home key anymore. It works similar to the latest iPhone device's, you just need to tap it to go back to the home screen or long tap to launch Google Assistant. Why I like that? Simply because you won't need to exert extra force to have this working, and good thing OPPO did it, if not then it is going to be a little harder when you really need to push that button using with only one hand. Plus this also doubles as a fingerprint scanner, and it works really fast.

4. Audio and Speaker

Aside from the quality of camera, audio and speaker quality is another thing I look for in a smartphone.  The OPPO F3 Plus has better, if not the best, built-in speaker that I have ever used so far. It is a very loud one too and it can fill an entire average room when in full volume. The audio quality is really good and detailed, don't just push it to full blast or the sound will start to distort. That's for speaker though, it is much better to listen to it when the in-ear earphones are plugged it, the experience is far better than using the speaker. The set of earphones that come with the F3 Plus is a very good one too, but if you have a much better one or headset, I think the listening experience is gonna go even more pleasant.

3. Screen and Display

Now sitting on my third list are the screen and display. I have mentioned this before in my previous posts that the bigger the display and  higher the resolution of a phone are the more I like it. This F3 Plus has 6-inch display size and bears Full HD IPS resolution, that's equivalent to 1920 x 1080 pixel arrangement and 361 pixels per inch density across the screen. Not to mention the bezels on both sides are extremely thin. Display color is a little saturated that at first it was thought to be having an AMOLED type of display. Needless to say, I really love it. It fits to my liking and is a perfect companion to watching my favorite series and movies on iFlix. If there is something I don't like about phones this big, it is a bit difficult to operate using one hand. But that is a thing I am willing to trade.

2. VOOC Flash Charge

The OPPO F3 Plus has a massive 4000mAh battery pack inside it. And most scenarios, big-batteried phones take more time to recharge. So thankfully OPPO decided to equip this one with their own VOOC Flash Charge technology. As expected it is definitely a fast charging one. The first time I charged the phone since taking out of the box was when it hit 9%. It took only about 90 minutes to have it back to 100%. To give you a comparison, I have another Android smartphone that do not have fast charging system and is packed with 5000mAh battery. I spend almost five hours (1 hour per 1000mAh) to fully charge it from less than 10% of battery life everytime. So experiencing OPPO's VOOC Flash Charge for the very first time is such as a good one.

1. Cameras

And of course it is obvious already. This is a selfie focused smartphone that OPPO is marketing and to make it stand out not just among its predecessors but also from its competitors as well, OPPO equipped the F3 Plus with two selfie shooters. One with 16MP main front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens and secondary one with 8MP 120-degree wide angle lens.

There are two types of dual-camera implementation on the market right now. First one is both work together where the secondary takes more details like depth and contrast such as those found on Huawei P9 and P10 series, and then the second one is to use the secondary camera for wide angle shots like from LG G5 and G6 (I think). So which one is used in OPPO F3 Plus? It's the second type. If you want to take the usual selfie photos like you would have, you can stick with the 16MP shooter. And if you prefer having a larger or wider background or fit more of your friends in a group photo, then you go switch to the secondary front camera, to do this you just need to tap the icon next to the on-screen camera shutter.

The rear camera on F3 Plus is also an upgraded one and something you don't really wanna take for granted. From 13MP with f/2.2 aperture in F1s, now up to 16MP with Sony IMX398 sensor, Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) and a larger and rather impressive f/1.7 aperture lens. In other words, the back camera on F3 Plus now produce better quality of photos especially images taken in low light situations. The color accuracy is on point as well. Plus it can now record in 4K format. There is only one thing I did not like about this camera, it does not have Optical Image Stabilization so shakey video clips from time to time should be expected. But for photos, it's solid most of the time. You may check out some sample shots I have using this phone in my Unboxing and Initial Impressions post here.

And those are the five things I like about OPPO F3 Plus smartphone. Do I recommend this phone to everybody? Well that will depend on your preferences. If you like devices with clear and bigger display, especially if you love consuming digital content on the internet or you are super active on social media space, then I really recommend this F3 Plus here.
