Huawei P10 Plus Unboxing and Quick Hands-On Review

The Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus are now officially available in the Philippines through various Huawei Concept Stores and authorized retailers nationwide for Php28,990 and Php36,990, respectively. It can also be had through Globe Postpaid Plans free with ThePlan 1799.

I have first unboxed the smaller P10 variant which you can check out here, and then today a gadget and electronics store here in Davao City called TekPone gave us the opportunity again to have a quick spin with the bigger and badder Huawei P10 Plus. The unit I got is in Dazzling Gold, it is available in multiple color options as well, but what's nice about Huawei P10 with "Dazzling" in its color names is that the back plate is textured which provides better grip and does not attract finger prints and smudges compared to "non-Dazzling" models.

Huawei P10 Plus Highlights

It is the best smartphone Huawei has created yet, it has much refined and faster software, bigger screen resolution (2560 x 1440), biggest RAM (6GB) and Internal Storage (128GB) as well, and of course it still has those Leica-certified dual camera on its back, even the 8MP front facing camera is now a Leica lens as well. Plus it comes in a variety of color selections that will be able to cater to users preferences and style. I personally like the Graphite Black and Dazzling Blue. Other shades  you can choose from are Prestige Gold, Dazzling Gold, Mystic Silver, White, and Greenery. There is Rose Gold too but only released in China.

What's In The Box

Obviously the P10 Plus comes in the same minimalist yet elegant looking white boxing as the P10 smartphone where nothing is shown outside except for the Huawei P10 Plus name at the upper right, and Leica and Huawei branding at the bottom of the box. See gif below on how you open the box to reveal what's inside. It's cool actually.

As for the content of the packaging, we have the standard documentation like the User Guide and Warranty Card. There are also the USB to USB Type-C charging cable, Fast Charge enabled wall charger, and Apple Earpods-looking pair of earphones, all in white as you can see in the image below. I think all of these accessories will be in white regardless of the unit's actual color.

And as the usual Huawei offering, this P10 Plus also comes with its own protective clear casing right out of the box. And yes it fits perfectly and beautifully on the phone, you still have your P10 Plus protected from any surface damages without hiding its sleek design and making it feel thicker.

The Huawei P10 Plus

Found on its back are the dual camera with Leica Summilux lenses, 20MP Monochrome and 12MP RGB with f/1.8 aperture, alongside it are the dual-tone LED flash and Autofocus sensor, Optical Image Stabilization is built-in as well with this camera and it can record up to 4K video formats. The entire back panel is dominated by the diamond-cut textured finish, at least for the Dazzling variants, which again I really like. You can even scratch your nails on it and hear it squeaks.

The Antenna lines found at the rear top and bottom of the phone are fashioned very similar to the iPhone 7. You will know when you see it especially if you are familiar with iPhone 7 already. Huawei took a lot of queues from the latest iPhones when designing the P10 and P10 Plus, but on top of it, they made the phones look much better by adding their own touch to it. So even though the phone may remind you of the iOS smartphones, you will definitely feel the difference when you hold it in your hands.

At the bottom are the busiest part of the P10 Plus, there we can find the still present 3.5mm jack, the new USB Type-C port which works blazingly fast especially with the built-in fast charging technology that Huawei included in this offering. Then there is the five pill-shaped speaker grilles and a microphone. On the opposite side of the phone are the IR Blaster sensor and the noise cancellation mic.

The Huawei P10 Plus sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD Display (versus the P10's 5.1" Full HD, 1920x1080 resolution), it has a total of 2560 x 1440 display resolution across its screen and 534 pixel per inch density. The display's brightness is pretty bright too. It can actually go as high as 525 nits, though not as high as Huawei Mate 9's 626 nits but still using the P10 Plus outdoor during daylight is definitely going to be a  pleasant one. The front panel is protected by the toughest Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It has a screen protector pre-applied on to the screen. However, the smartphone does not appear to have an oleophobic coating which is kind of disappointing for a phone priced this much. If you don't have a sweaty type of hands or fingers, I think this will not matter too much for you. But an oleophobic feature will definitely be appreciated by everyone so the phone's smooth screen can be enjoyed without worrying too much about the fingerprints and smudges.

My overall viewing and navigation experience with this device had been nothing but great during its short time with me, every image and text are crisp and vivid as they should, thanks to its 2K display.

Furthermore on the sides of the P10 Plus, the Volume Rocker and Power/Lock key are found on the right side while on the left is nothing but the hybrid Dual-SIM card slot. It's a hybrid type of tray which means you can either have two SIM cards running at the same time or one SIM and another microSD card in the second slot.

Memory and Storage

As mentioned above, the memory and storage are two of the biggest highlights on the Huawei P10 Plus. In some other markets, it is also available in 4GB RAM/64GB storage configurations but in the Philippines we only have the 6GB/128GB version. I just don't know if the smaller variant will be released here as well in the future.

At initial boot, about 108GB of space are usable and the rest are used by the system's Android 7.0 Nougat with Huawei's Emotion UI 5.1 and some are reserved for future software updates. The remaining space might be not enough for your files, music, and other content so it's good thing to know that it can support microSD card with up to 256GB in size.

Fingerprint Scanner and On-Screen Navigation Buttons

Fingerprint Reader has now become a standard security feature for all flagship devices, even the midranger ones are also now getting this feature almost everytime. Huawei P10 Plus' finger reader has been relocated to the front face right below the screen. On the P9 series, it was situated on the back.

Apart from moving the reader to the front panel, Huawei also added more functionality to it as well. It now doubles as a capacitive key for navigating the screen. By default, this feature is deactivated and the on-screen keys are enabled. If you don't like using those Back, Home, and Multitask buttons on the screen, you can simply head to the settings of the device, disable it and activate the physical button. Now to use this button, you just single tap to go back to the previous page, tap and hold will bring you back to the home screen, and then swipe it to the left or right to access recent apps or activate split screen for displaying two apps at once.

And just like many other fingerprint sensor, you can enroll multiple prints so you can unlock the device using any of those registered fingers.

Co-Engineered Leica Cameras

Two cameras on the back and one on the front are the main stars of the P10 series. In the P9, only the rear shooters are Leica-certified but in this year's Huawei flagships, the 8MP front snapper is now a Leica lens. It is important to take note that even though both the P10 and P10 Plus sport the same shooters, the P10 Plus has a much larger aperture at f/1.8 compared to P10's f/2.2. This means it is capable of getting far more amount of light than the smaller sibling which in turn will make shots even better even if the photos are taken in low light environment.

What's unique about Huawei and Leica's dual camera implementation is that the two shooters work together to capture more details and depth of the subject. One of the best results you can get out of using these cameras are having the Bokeh effect in photos, it is the ability to highlight the focus even more on the subject and blur the background for a more dramatic effect, which is something many users found to be cool.

Unfortunately, due to extremely limited time I had with the P10 Plus and the fact that I had it during working days, I was not able to get sample photos using it. Though I was able to check what's inside the camera apps while I unboxed it. And one thing I can say, which I have already said in my P10 unboxing post, that this phone is too photography-centric where there are a lot of features, settings, and functionalities available to help users capture the most artistic photo they can, and that is definitely the advantage of having this phone, DSLR and photography-savvy people will for sure love it. For starters and some users who are not really familiar with camera and photography, it might take them a little more time for get used to all of these overwhelming functionalities in the camera settings. And I wish I really had more time with this smartphone to experience more its camera muscles.
