Watched Guardians of the Glaxy Vol 2, and in IMAX for the First Time

Yes IMAX cinemas have been in the Philippines like for about a decade now and all this time I did not watch any movies in IMAX until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out. Kinda bummer right? But yes, that's a true story. Well, there were a couple of good reasons (I think) why I waited this long to try this one of the amazing movie experience technologies around. Some of them had to do with the available movies released in IMAX, plus I thought that the technology back in its early days was not that refined yet, and of course it was still kind of expensive for me to try IMAX when I thought I could get almost the same experience when watching movies in 3D which at the time was a lot cheaper than IMAX, additionally I could not see any IMAX-worthy movie up until this one. Those were my personal reasons, some of them may not be acceptable to you and you may agree that there were already other movies best watched in this cinema format. So finally I was able to try IMAX and it's with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Now I want to share with you my impressions of the IMAX and of course of the movie itself, this post is of course aimed at those people who have not experienced it yet and still thinking twice if it's worth it or not.

Here in Davao City, IMAX cinemas are only available at SM Lanang Premier, it's been there since that particular mall was officially opened in 2012 and one of my fellow Davao Bloggers friends said it was the Avengers that the first movie shown at the cinema. At that time I was working in Manila and only returned to Davao the next year.

So going back, while 3D format is awesome especially for animated movies, I did not find it that amazing simply because I have been wearing eye glasses since 2010, and most cinemas don't have very good glasses that work fine with people who wear glasses. If you are like me who wear prescription glasses and have tried 3D, you know the feeling.  I even considered wearing contact lenses before but I did not like the idea of attaching something physical and artificial on to my eyes, I think it is a bit of a hassle, plus it is not advisable to sleep while you have those on you eyes. That being said, on top of my other reasons mentioned above, this is also one of the biggest factors that helped me decide longer.

But since I already promised myself that I would see the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in IMAX this year, I set aside those reasons this time around. I just now wanted to try it, personally experience it and see if this is also not for me. The a day after the movie came out here in the Philippines, Andrew of Drew.Blog invited me, Josef of, Jim of DigitalDavao.Com, and Ria of to join him in watching the movie as well in IMAX. Of course we said yes in a heart bit since we all like the franchise since Vol. 1 not to mention it is a Marvel movie.

The IMAX Impressions

If I remember it right back in Manila, my friends would say that they did not like the IMAX glasses, it was too big for them and uncomfortable to use. If they were telling the truth or not, I had no idea. So when I finally got my hands on the today's IMAX glasses, I would say, they are not that big and not that small either. Just large enough to cover all your field of view and take note.. even with corrective glasses on.

Most importantly, the glasses are almost perfectly designed that it provides better grip around my head. That means, the IMAX glasses do not fall off my nose or face even if I move around or switch sitting position. That is one of my greatest issues with 3D versions. So that experience alone already won me back to this department of movie theaters.

The IMAX screen is also the same, not humongous I as imagined but large enough as well for one's field of view. We entered the cinema with the lights turned off already, but from what I saw the screen is a bit curved just like many smart TVs of today.

Yes this is correct! IMAX screen shows more and wider background than the standard format. How do I know that? I also watched the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2D the next day to compare. And I wanna say that the IMAX format is much refined and more fluid than regular 3D films. Almost everything is on point and you I did not notice any sort of distorted or out of angle objects or frames. And the 3D effect in IMAX really pops out and almost right in front of my face. Remember the Marvel opening clips where every Avengers superhero and villain are shown while revealing the classic MARVEL logo, and Captain America throws his shield like he did in the Winder Soldier? It felt like it was right in front of my nose and I tried to catch it like what Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier) did in that movie. It was cool. And then the rest of the experience was pure awesomeness, thanks to IMAX technology and to Director James Gunn for creating such as a colorful, action packed space opera movie. After watching, I told myself that I will probably be seeing the upcoming Marvel and DC movies in IMAX moving forward, and Star Wars too! IMAX is awesome, and I think you should give it a try as well if you haven't yet.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Impressions

Don't worry I won't mention any spoilers here.

With the unexpected global success of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014, the expectations on the second outing this year had been nothing but really really high. Because many people and critics thought that Guardians of the Galaxy was already one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever created offering both strong plot points, spectacular picture, and hilarious humor that's rarely observed in superhero films.

Some people who have seen the movie thought that it was not able to deliver the same charm it did in the original installment, perhaps they are right because we didn't know what we were getting with that first movie. Most of moviegoers were not even familiar with any of these space A-Holes, Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot and many others. And usually we always expect for sequels to outperform its predecessors just like in the smartphone scenes. To me that is understandable, but my personal take on the Vol 2 is that James Gunn and the cast still nailed it. It's still the same Guardians I know, the same Galaxy they are protecting and saving, with much more content to their characters and origins and more personal connection with each of them.

Prepare for a lot of baby Groot moments, a lot of adorable-ness, and a lot of fun with the whole gang as well. I am glad to say that I did not see what I thought I would based on the trailers Marvel has released for this. There were a good number of surprise cameos, so you better focus while watching. The ending was a bit unexpected and I think a memorable one as well for the franchise.

I don't wanna say more about this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I think I have said enough that I did love this installment and enjoy watching it from beginning to the end.

Last but not least, post credits scenes. Since it is a Marvel movie, post-credits scenes are expected. And there are not just one or two of them, there are FIVE after credits clips so if you want to catch all of them and probably get some hints as to what to expect in the Vol. 3 (which is already confirmed), you better stay until the very very end.
