Asus ZenFone AR Now in PH, See Pricing, Features, and Specs Here

The first ever Google Tango and Google Daydream platforms ready smartphone called the Asus ZenFone AR has finally been launched in the Philippines last Saturday. This latest launch from Asus just fulfilled its promise a couple of months back that they would bring the phone locally before June ends. If you have been following news surrounding this augmented reality-focused smartphone, it is most likely that the pricing is what you have waiting for by this time. Asus announced a whopping Php44,995 price sticker for the ZenFone AR and availability beginning July 2017.

When first heard in May that ASUS would be launching this phone here  sometime in June, I estimated that the pricing for this smartphone would be around Php40,000 mark. Well my guess was not that far from its actual suggested retail price.

You may have heard this already like a million times that the ZenFone AR is the second device to sport Google Tango (Augmented Reality) technology following last year's Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, and one of the very few phones to support Google Daydream (Virtual Reality) platform. Apart from those, this is also the first announced device to have a staggering 8GB of RAM right out of the box. Those Tango and Daydream require a lot of power and room to smoothly operate, so seeing an 8GB RAM here is supposed to be normal, although in the normal smartphone scene today in the market, that much of RAM is still considered as overkill.

What is Google Tango?

It is an Augmented Reality platform that Google itself developed. This particular technology allows the phone to incorporate virtual things into actual reality. One of the best and early examples of augmented reality is the Pokemon Go mobile game which gives users the impressions that the Pokemon they catch and track using their smartphones actually exist in real world. But that's just not the Tango is all about as main feature of this tech is to enable the phone and the its software to detect its local position and location, for example in a room, without the use of GPS or any outside signal. If you want to see how this Google Tango really works in ZenFone AR,watch below a quick demo from Gian of Gadget Pilipinas.

This particular feature and functionality from Tango is achieved by the ZenFone AR through its tri-camera system situated on the back. There is the primary 23MP camera all equipped with high-end camera features such as Sony IMX318 sensor, OIS, EIS, PDAF etc, then the two remaining cameras are for motion tracking and depth sensing functionality.

What is Google Daydream?

Google Daydream on the other hand is a Virtual Reality platform, unlike Augmented Reality, this platform does not use actual reality. It is also a VR technology developed by Google with the use of their Daydream View headset with its own controller and the latest Android Nougat OS. This means that a Daydream-ready smartphone should be compatible both with its hardware and software. And while Google has confirmed that other brands like Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi, Huawei and many others will also manufacture Daydream compatible smartphones, it is the ASUS ZenFone AR ( and the Google Pixel devices) are currently out in the market compatible with Daydream.
