OPPO F3 vs OPPO F5: What Are The Differences?

What is or are the differences between the F3 and the F5? That's probably one of the most common questions we get to hear from O-fans around the internet when they heard that the newly unveiled F5 smartphone also bears the same price tag as the F3 when launched earlier this year - Php15,990. And then most likely the next question is, is it worth the upgrade or switch? That I will try to answer in this post through providing quick comparisons between the two.

The quick and short answer would be YES, of course. Looking at the specs, features, and design, the F5 definitely does offer more power and upgraded experience than the F3 for the same retail price. Design wise, the F5 is far better looking than the predecessor. But that does not mean we like everything about the F5 versus the F3. For example, instead of still using the same unibody metal casing from the old iteration, OPPO opted for a premium plastic metal-looking back panel this time around with the F5 as pointed out by Unbox.PH's unboxing article.

Display and Screen

Both devices have the same 1080p display resolution right off the bat. But what makes the F5 more attractive than the F3 is the screen size and design. The F5 sports a much trendy 18:9 aspect ratio which is the kind of display many smartphone users now look for in purchasing new phones. That aspect ratio enables the F5 to sport bigger and taller display but with relatively the same dimension as the F3. And having this kind of display, does not just make the screen bigger but also makes more room for additional pixels. The OPPO F5 has a total of 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution across the front display panel. In comparison, F3 only has 1920 x 1080. Both devices are protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Processor, RAM, and Storage

Unlike on the bigger F3 Plus variant where a Snapdragon chip is embedded right into its core, OPPO decided to still have MediaTek as its processor provider for the new F5, just like with the F3.  The F3 has a 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750T chip while the F5 has 2.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6763 processor. Both of them feature 4GB RAM. And as for the storage, many users won't be happy to hear that it only comes with 32GB as opposed to F3's 64GB. Good thing is, these devices can handle microSD card for space expansion of up to at least 128GB. More awesome is, both have their own dedicated microSD card slots. This means, users can still continue to run two SIM cards at the same time without sacrificing the use of microSD card for additional storage.

Operating System

Major software update is something that OPPO still needs to work on. Although the Chinese company releases software patches from time to time to fix minor issues with the device's functions, they almost never rolled out a major software update. For example the F3 variant, when it was released it's running on ColorOS 3.1 version based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. I am just not sure if the ColorOS is now 3.2 version on this one but I am pretty sure it is still based on that same Android OS. But the F5, I am happy to report that it now has ColorOS 3.2 based on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. That should provide a ton of improvements over the previous versions.

Now for the camera department. Well OPPO is still focusing on the Selfie side of smartphone photography here. However, the dual front camera set up (16MP + 8MP) with 120-degree wide angle lens from the F3 is now gone with the F5. In place of the dual selfie shooter, the F5 has a larger and more improved 20MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens. On the ear is still the same single camera but with a much enhanced one, from 13MP with f/2.2 it has now 16MP with f/1.8 aperture lens and LED flash. That should provide an even better rear camera shots even in lowlight scenes.

With the previous F series of devices, what we have been having is  the Beauty Mode where we users are given the capability to manually adjust our skin tone and remove blemishes to our satisfaction before the selfie photo is taken. This has been one of the crowd favorites when it comes to recent OPPO smartphones which is really really good and able to deliver the job. However, with the new F5 smartphone and its massive 20MP front camera, OPPO is introducing a first in its line of smartphones that promises to bring their selfie game to a whole new level - the A.I. Beauty Recognition Technology.

This is how OPPO explains this A.I. Beauty Recognition on their website, "With more than 200 positioning spots, the F5 accentuates your facial landmarks and contours to enhance the symmetry between features like your eyes, nose, cheekbones, and jawline to create the perfectly refined and natural selfie. Its beauty-iris tool ensures that your eyes will shine brighter in any photo."

Connectivity and Security

As for its connectivity features, there are the usual WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and A-GPS on the F5. That also includes the dual-SIM functionality with up to 4G LTE support on each slot. And as mentioned above, the F3 and F5 both have non-hydrid SIM slots. Meaning it has three slots in total to handle two SIM cards and a microSD card all at the same time. Also it depends on how you take this, but like the F3, the F5 still uses the same microUSB port for charging the phone and for file transfer function. The 3.5mm audiojack is still present on the new device.

While Fingerprint Scanner is a returning feature on the F5, OPPO is adding another security functionality with the F5. The Chinese company is calling it Face Unlock which as the name suggests, will enable users to unlock the phone using their face.

The OPPO F3 and F5 share the same battery size. 3200mAh. Given that these devices have almost the same dimension, it is not surprising that OPPO decided to use the same battery size on the F5 despite it having a larger display. Let's just hope that the battery lasts as long as on the F3 if not longer.

The OPPO F5 is currently on pre-order until November 3. Customers who pre-order will receive free Olike Bluetooth speaker worth Php2,990. The device will be officially released on November  4, 2017 for Php15,990.
