Huawei P20 and P20 Pro Are Now Formally Launched

At an event in Paris, France, Huawei has finally launched its new flagship smartphones for this year officially called the P20 and the P20 Pro. Both devices sport a stunning design that is way more head turner than last year's P10 lineup, a notch (which can be hidden in case you are not fond of it), a 19:9 aspect ratio, a 24MP front facing camera, and up to three Leica lenses on the rear panel.

Main differences

Just like any duo flagships being launched, the naming always gives the clue which one is better and which is great. That is also the case with these two with the Pro being the more interesting and more attractive one in terms of specs and what it can offer to its rightful owners. So what makes the P20 Pro different from its P20 brother? First of all is the screen size, the P20 has a 5.8-inch LCD one while the P20 Pro bears a larger 6.1-inch with OLED panel. Both have the same Full HD+ resolution, but because they have different type of display panels, the P20 ended up having more pixels.

The random memory access or RAM on the P20 Pro is 2GB higher than the P20 at 6GB. The internal storage is the same for the two at 128GB. Battery is also another difference of the duo. With the P20, users will get a 3400mAh pack while the P20 Pro owners will enjoy a much bigger 4000mAh battery. And then last but not least is the IP certification. The P20 and P20 Pro both got one. The former is equipped with IP53 and the latter gets IP67 for water and dust resistance.

Of course, the camera set up is another feature that separates the two. More on that below.

Camera

As usual for a Huawei P series smartphone, camera and its capability is its most highlighted feature. The P20 is still equipped with dual rear Leica cameras, one with 12MP RGB with f/1.8 aperture and another with 20MP monochrome sensor and f/1.6 aperture. As opposed to the P20, the Pro version houses a triple-lens camera setup on its back all Leica branded lenses. Those three rear shooters are pegged at 40MP (RGB) with f/1.8, 20MP (Monochrome) with f/1.6, and 8MP (telephoto) with f/2.4. The third 8MP camera will allow the photo to do up to 3x optical zoom or 5x hybrid zoom.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro both have the same 24MP front facing camera housed together with the earpiece inside the notch. Those are the only two systems found in the notch, that's why it is that narrow unlike those of iPhone X and Asus ZenFone 5 devices which are a lot longer or wider. The P20 is the first device from the series to have Facial Unlock feature, and this front camera module is up for the task.

In the Mate 10 series, Huawei introduced the AI-powered camera functionalities that it had with the help of the company's own "Neural Processing Unit" that came along with the Kirin 970 processor. That is also the same case here with the P20 and P20 Pro. Photos and videos are more AI-enhanced and customized depending on the subject that is being captured to produce the best possible qualities. Plus a ton of camera settings and features to help the amateur and pro camera enthusiasts to playaround with and capture their preferred shots.

No headphone jack anymore

Sad to say, Huawei has complete done away with the 3.5mm audiojack port on the P20 and P20 Pro just like what they have initially done with the Mate 10 Pro last year.

Fingerprint Sensor

Aside from the handsets' new ability to be unlocked using a user's face, there is still the fingerprint scanner sitting right below the display. Huawei says it is more practical to place that sensor on the front than on the back. And the good thing about this one is, it still works just like on the previous Huawei devices, as it supports swipe gestures to navigate the screen.
