Specs and features

The front and back panels of the Huawei P40 are made of glass with IP53 certification. Design-wise, of course it's pretty impressive and you will immediately know it's a flagship smartphone. Front panel sports 6.1-inch OLED panel with Full HD+ display resolution with the fingerprint sensor built right into it. That's equivalent to 2340 x 1080 pixel arrangement. Unlike its big brothers, the P40 does not have the faster and smoother 90Hz refresh rate, rather a regular 60Hz one.

Powering the Huawei P40 is an octa-core HiSilicon 990 5G processor. With it are the Mali-G76 GPU and Big Core + Tiny Core NPU co-processors. The phone is going to be released in three variants, 6GB + 128GB, 8GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB. The storage can still be expanded up to additional 256GB but only using Huawei's proprietary NM Card.

On the front is a pill-shaped punch hole cutout on the upper left. This holds the 32MP selfie shooter and an IR Camera. Then on the back are triple camera setup housed in the rectangular shaped camera island together with the LED flash. The primary shooter boasts a 50MP Ultravision camera with wide angle lens and f1.9 aperture. Its secondary camera is pegged at 16MP with ultrawide angle lens and f2.2 aperture, and then the third shooter at 8MP equipped with telephoto lens and f2.4 aperture. All the camera lenses are equipped with OIS and supports autofocus as well as AIS or Huawei AI Image Stabilization.

When in comes to software, the Huawei P40 together with its siblings, is running on the latest EMUI 10.1 OS that is based on the open-source version of the current Android 10 OS. As you would expect, most especially if you have been following news about Huawei's recent smartphones, the P40 does not come with Google services.

Meaning, there is no Google Play store pre-installed in the phone. That said, for downloading your apps, you will have to use Huawei's own app store which is called the AppGallery. This app store has grown a lot in terms of app selections since Huawei started focusing its attention and resources on it. Additionally, more and more apps are being added to the AppGallery. And if in case you can't find your favorite apps from the AppGallery, APK apps is the other way to go.

Unlike the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ variants, the vanilla P40 does not support wireless charging. However, it still packs a wired fast charging feature called the Huawei SuperCharge rated at 22.5W. As for its battery size, there is 3800mAh battery pack to keep the lights on.
