In addition to the more high-end and more stunningly-looking Y7p that Huawei released in the Philippines right before the Enhanced Community Quarantine was imposed in the entire Luzon, the Chinese smartphone maker also brought (just this March) another more budget-friendly smartphone offering under the same series - meet the Y7 2019 sporting more spacious 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. And here is my official unboxing and initial hands-on impressions of the device.

With this smartphone, apart from Huawei is positioning this as a budget-centric device for its Filipino fans under the sub Php7K category, it highlights a few of its main offerings. Its most highlighted feature centers on the RAM and the expandable onboard storage sizes right out of the box - 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Next is its build and design with more focused on the Aurora Purple color variant (the one we have here), then the huge 6.26-inch HD+ display panel, 13MP dual rear camera with AI system, and the 14nm Snapdragon 450 processor from Qualcomm.

With those highlighted features, the company hopes the phone will catch the attention of more and more users in the Philippines in the budget segment. So for how much this device is? - only Php6,990.

What's in the box

The boxing of the Huawei Y7 is pretty similar to the Huawei Y7p's (read my unboxing and initial review here). By the way, all photos here are taken using the Huawei Y7p, all unedited, in case you wonder.

Inside the box are the Quick Start Guide, Warranty Card, soft jelly case, microUSB charging cable, a pair of standard earphones and a brick charger. And then of course the Huawei Y7 unit itself in Aurora Purple with the screen protector already pre-installed. It's nice to see the packaging comes with a jelly case that consumers can use right away after taking the phone out of the box. This is a good treat most especially to those who prefer to have their phones protected not just from bumps and falls, but also from scratches and fingerprints.

Regarding the wall charger, I know it looks different than what we usually or supposed to get. I reached out to our friends over at Huawei and I was told that this is indeed the type of power charger that the Y7 2019 comes in the box with. Unfortunately, there is no adapter included.

Build and design

Upon opening the box, it's the Y7 itself that will greet you right away covered in a soft plastic storage. Lifting the plastic off will finally reveal you the unit itself, and the first thing that you will likely notice is the phone's build, feel and the finish on the back. My initial impressions is that the phone feels lightweight despite having a quite huge of a battery inside, the curve on the back provides better grip and thinner feels to it, and it's unmistakenly made of polycarbonate plastic material. The build is sturdy though and does not feel shallow and that's a good thing.

The Aurora Purple color finish on the back is just a delight to look at. It has a slight gradient effect to it and depending on how much light is hitting the surface it becomes less or more prominent. As you can already see in the image above, yes the back panel has glossy finish which means it is fingerprint and smudge hungry of a surface. If you want that surface nice and clean all the time, you might want to slap the free soft jelly case on as soon as possible.

The front of the Huawei Y7 offers a huge 6.26-inch screen with a dewdrop notch right at the upper center of the display holding the selfie camera. At the bottom of the display panel is the Huawei branding. Plus, there is a screen protector already pre-installed on the display.

The display quality, which offers 720p resolution, is not one of the best out there in terms of sharpness and color reproduction quality as expected. But for an every-level such as this, the quality or viewing experience it will provide is decent. In terms of screen-to-body ratio, it boasts 86.7%. The notch, holding the 8MP selfie camera, is noticeably there and if you don't like it that much there is a way to hide it via an option in the settings, a feature that is usually found on Huawei smartphones.

The Huawei Y7 is equipped with dual camera setup on the back and a single-lens selfie camera housed in the dewdrop notch. On the rear we find a 13MP primary lens with f/1.8 aperture allowing more light to come in every time a shot is made. Then the secondary rear camera has 2MP which has depth sensor for Bokeh effect when taking portrait shots. Both of these cameras are AI-powered and are capable of recognizing 21 different scenes and objects and adjusting the color composition to provide the best possible photo quality.

The rear cameras are capable of recording videos in 720p and 1080p with 30fps formats. In Selfie mode, the front camera can also record video but only in 720p.  In addition to the default Auto mode for taking photos, there are also the Aperture, Beauty, Panorama, HDR, and Pro modes. These modes are also accessible through the front camera.

Due to the community quarantine and the strict implementation in our area, I am not able to go out and take photos or videos using the phone. So unfortunately, I don't have sample photos at the moment in this post. However, based on my initial judgement of the cameras on this device, I would say that they can produce decent quality of photos most especially when there is ample light in the environment when the photo is taken. Expect the quality to decrease as the light becomes less and less. In other words, while the phone is capable of producing good photos and videos most of the time, don't expect too much, we are looking at a sub-Php7K smartphone after all.

Software and the app store

On the software side of things, the Huawei Y7 2019 is powered by a quite dated Android 8 Oreo with EMUI 8.2 on top right out of the box. I checked for an update, and sadly there is none as currently, the phone says the software is "up to date" or the latest version.

There is a good news though about this version of the OS, it comes with a Google Mobile Services such as the Google Play right off the bat which means you can still download your mobile applications from the app store. In addition to that, the now third biggest app store in the world, the Huawei AppGallery, is also available on this device. The App Gallery is now bigger and more secure than ever and it continues to grow in terms of available mobile apps as I write this post.

Huawei Y7 2019: other features and specs

Under the hood of the Huawie Y7 2019 is a 4000mAh battery pack. For an entry-level smartphone such as this one, this battery is quite big even in today's standard. This should be enough to last for more than a day or even up to two days on a single charge depending on usage. With this huge of a battery, Huawei says it can last up to 103 hours on music playback, up to 22 hours on HD video playback, up to 51 hours of talktime, and up to 13 hours on browsing the internet.

At the top on the phone are the 3.5mm audiojack port together with a microphone. At the bottom are the speaker, microUSB port, and probably another mic for taking and making calls. On the right are the volume rocker and power/lock keys, while of the left is the triple-slot SIM tray. So on this device you can have two 4G LTE SIM cards and a microSD card all at the same time.

Initial verdict

I think the Huawei Y7 2019 is a pretty capable phone, though it still sports a two-year-old Android software, it is still able to run almost every mobile app out there without any problem. You just don't want to try running multiple apps in the background at the same time or else you will feel the phone to start running slow or some apps shutting down or lagging on you. I tried playing some of the games I play including Asphalt 9 and Mobile Legends on the Huawei Y7 2019, the phone is able to deliver quite decent performance overall.

Apart from the design (Aurora Purple to be exact) and build of the device, I like the fact that it comes with its own pair of standard headset, clear jelly case, triple-slot SIM tray right out of the box and of course the 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage that it offers which I think is still more than enough for most users on a budget.
