Huawei Y5p Unboxing and Initial Hands-on Review

huawei y5p hands on review

Huawei Philippines is one of the busiest smartphone brands in the country in last few months launching and releasing new products in the local market. In addition to the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G which was just formally launched locally late last week, the brand has also released its latest entry-level offering and the newest member of the Y series called the Y5p in the country. Today, they sent me a review unit for me to try and share with you my experience with it. That said, here is my unboxing and first hands-on review of the budget-centric Huawei Y5p smartphone.

What's in the box

What's inside the boxing of the Huawei Y5p is pretty standard as one would expect from a budget friendly smartphone. Apart from the Y5p unit itself which comes in Phantom Blue, in there we can find the microUSB charging cable and the standard power brick. Also in the box are the usual warranty and user guide paperwork as well as the SIM ejecting tool. A pair of earphones and protective jelly case are nowhere to be found in the packaging, though the phone's screen is pre-installed with a protective film.

Meet the Huawei Y5p

The Huawei Y5p will be released in three different color selections, in addition to the Phantom Blue I got in here, there's also the Mint Green and Midnight Black color variants. Upfront, the phone sports a 5.45-inch LCD screen with HD+ or 720p display resolution. As you can already observe, this device does not have any notch or cutout on the screen for the front camera just like many other smartphones nowadays. Instead, Huawei opted-in for a more traditional screen design where the selfie camera is situated right above the screen alongside the earpiece that doubles as the phone's speaker. This design choice also results to a much thicker upper and lower bezels just like the smartphones of the previous couple of years. Part of this design decision surely had to do in keeping the price as cheaper as possible.

Huawei says the screen has 81% screen-to-body ratio and 18:9 screen ratio offering about 10% more content in the display than a traditional 16:9 smartphone. This Y5p is an entry-level smartphone only priced below Php5K mark. That being said, and while the phone offers bright display with vibrant color reproduction of text and images, don't expect too much from this device in terms of display quality. For its pricing, I think its just about right.

In terms of ports and buttons, the Huawei Y5p is equipped with microUSB port at the bottom for charging and file transferring needs, together with it is the microphone for making and taking calls, as well as for video recording purposes. As you can see, the speakers are not located in here. That's because it is integrated with the earpiece above the screen, as mentioned earlier.

On the right side of the smartphone are the volume rocker and power/lock key, while on the other side is the triple-slot card tray. This means, users are enabled to use two SIM cards and a microSD card up to 512GB all at the same time, and I think that's a generous offer in spite of the phone's sub-Php5k asking price. And then at the top part of the device is nothing but the 3.5mm audio jack port.

Now on to its back cover design. I think, for an entry level such as this, the phone has a stylish design. The camera module gives off an impression that it packs a multiple camera set-up, which it is not, and then the textured back panel finish provides a nice feel to the hand. Apart from it is not a fingerprint and smudge hungry of a surface, the overall build of the phone is pretty comfortable to hold and operate single-handedly.

If you have already noticed, there is no fingerprint reader to be found anywhere on this phone. Not on the back, on the front below the screen, or on the side either. However, users will be able to take advantage of its Face Recognition and the traditional passcode features for their data security and privacy in the phone.

The Huawei Y5p holds a single 8MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash.  The front camera, on the other hand, it does have a 5MP selfie shooter.

The rear snapper features different camera modes like Auto, Beauty, Pro, Panorama, and HDR. It can record videos in 720 and 1080p formats. The same features are also available for the front facing camera. See a couple of sample photos I was able to snap while unboxing the phone. These are all in-door photos though, I hope to capture more outdoor images in the coming days. So either I will update this post with those new photos or I will just include them in my full review.

Software, OS, and the AppGallery

On the internal and software side of things, the Huawei Y5p is powered by the latest EMUI 10.1 based on the current Android 10 mobile operating system. Since the device only comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage right out of the box, we can expect that not all of the features of EMUI 10.1 offers are available here, especially the ones for more high-end models. This is also to ensure that the phone will run smoothly all the time. Out of 32GB, about 24GB is available to users at initial boot.

If your question about this device is if it now supports Google Play, the answer is still no. But there is Huawei's very own app distribution platform and is the third biggest app store in the world, the AppGallery.  Additionally, this AppGallery is getting bigger and bigger as more developers partner with Huawei, including top names like Facebook, Snapchat, and Viber for social media and messaging, Viu and iFlix are also available for media streaming. For online banking, users can download PayMaya and UnionBank directly from the AppGallery. And if your favorite apps are not available on the AppGallery, you can even download them from third-party app stores like APKPure.

Huawei recently introduced a new mobile app that can help users find the best place to download their favorite apps whether it's from the AppGallery itself, the mobile app's website, or from third-party apps marketplace. It's called the AppGo and it can be downloaded from the AppGallery itself. If you own a Huawei phone or planning on getting one, you should definitely give it a try.

Initial verdict

The Huawei Y5p smartphone is an entry-level phone, so right off the bat, don't expect this device to do more demanding tasks such as playing quite heavy games. But for daily smartphone usage such as browsing the internet, scrolling through your social media apps, or binge-watching your favorite vlogs on YouTube or other streaming platforms, the Y5p can definitely perform. The interface is responsive most of the time and it executes the tasks it is given quite well with some delays sometimes. Not the fastest smartphone around even for the entry level category, but definitely can deliver the performance we can expect from this type of devices quite well.

Photos and videos are not that great as expected, but are decent enough to capture good amount of details and colors and be shared to social media platforms. The better the lighting condition, the better quality of photos and videos are produced by the phone.

I liked the phone's design, most especially on the back. The textured and matte finish is the thing to behold on this smartphone. Its overall build, in addition to being quite comfortable in the hand as any hand size will have no problem operating this device, feels solid and sturdy. While the back cover is made of plastic material, it is solidly built, plus it's super lightweight.
