Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Now Officially Announced

After countless rumors and leaks the newest Samsung flagship devices have just been officially unveiled by the South Korean electronics company in Barcelona today at the Mobile World Congress 2015. Just as everybody was expecting and these unconfirmed reports were claiming, Samsung announced not one but two marquee smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the other with two-sided curved displays Galaxy S6 Edge. Both are beautiful phones. I think I can call them the most beautiful Galaxy S device of all. All-metal casing and front and back are covered in Gorilla Glass 4.

Previous Samsung S flagships mostly were enclosed in plastic or faux leather chassis, plus the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 were closely identical to each other in terms of physical design and if I remember it right many were not that excited when the S5 was launched because of that. Then Samsung promised to make the next Galaxy device better than the last iterations, and I can say that the electronics giant was able to deliver that promise with the new smartphones.

Checking the technical specifications of the two monsters, they share almost the same specs except for some minor differences. The biggest difference we can see in the two is the battery size, S6 will have a 2,550mAh while the S6 Edge will be equipped with 2,600mAh battery pack. And although the two have the same display configurations with Quad HD or 2560x1440 (and 577ppi), the S6 Edge is a bit larger that's obviously due to the additional curved screens on both sides of the main screen.

In spite of  of the devices new premium looks and feel and all these new features and upgrades, there are a couple of things that did not make to the final products. No waterproof, no microSD card slot and the battery is now non-removable.

Samsung Galaxy S6 specs:

- 5.1" QHD Super AMOLED Display
- 2560x1440 resolution, 577ppi
- Octa-core 14-nm Exynos processor
- 3GB RAM
- 32/64/128GB Internal storage
- No microSD card slot
- 16MP rear camera with OIS technology
- 5MP front camera with 90 degrees wide angle lens
- Android 5.0 Lollipop
- Fingerprint scanner
- WiFi 802.11/a/c
- Bluetooth LE
- LTE Cat 6
- NFC
- Samsung Pay
- 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm
- 138 grams
- White Pearl, Black Sapphire, and Gold Platinum
- Wireless charging with support for WPC and PMA standards
- 2,550mAh battery

As expected, Samsung equipped the smartphones with the latest Google mobile OS, Android 5.0 Lollipop right out of their respective boxes. Samsung also claims they have trimmed down the TouchWiz to make it simpler. As for the batteries and charging features, yes they do support wireless charging also with WPC and PMA standards compatibility. The Korea-based company said that they have also improve the charging capability of the device, it said that it now charges about 1.5 times faster than the Galaxy S5. 10 minutes of charging will give users up to two hours of video playback and it can be fully charged in just 80 minutes. That sounds cool and better than the previous Galaxy S installments.

As for its availability, we can expect the Galaxy S6 (and the Galaxy S6 hopefully) to be around in second quarter of the year. Some blogs and websites report that Samsung will release the smartphones on April 10 in several countries. There is a post on Unbox.ph and they said they have already confirmed with Samsung Philippines that the 32GB and 64GB for both S6 and S6 Edge will be released in the country, however the 128GB variant is still to be confirmed in the near future.

Pricing is also yet to be disclosed, that's most likely be on a market basis announcement, but expect the Galaxy S6 Edge's price a bit higher than the regular Galaxy S6. To give you a tiny expectation, Galaxy Note Edge in the Philippines is about Php6K more expensive than the normal Galaxy Note 4 when they arrived here.

Additionally, in response to Apple's payment system service called Apple Pay Samsung also announced their own version of it and simply called it Samsung Pay. The Samsung Pay is said to be available in about 90% of the retailers in the US atleast and is going to work with almost all major banks in the US like JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America. Samsung added that it supports both Mastercard and Visa cards.
