HMD Global Reboots the Classic Nokia 8110 for 2018 with 4G Support

I am 100% sure you still remember that last year, during MWC 2017, HMD Global relaunched the iconic Nokia 3310 with a refreshed modern design but still very reminiscent of the old folk 3310 back in the day. This year, the Finnish company is once again joining the biggest mobile tech expo on the planet to give us yet another brand new treat, a resurrected and revamped also-iconic Nokia device from the past - meet the Nokia 8110 4G aka the Banana Phone!

To be honest, I really did not see this coming. And I think I am not the only one. It was a well-kept secret by HMD unlike last year's Nokia 3310 where we heard a few rumors days before the MWC kicked off. But this one, nothing.

In case you have not realized yet, the Nokia 8110 was featured in the 1999 movie The Matrix where Keanu Reeve's character named Neo is seen using this phone. Incidentally, I just rewatched The Matrix (first of the trilogy) on Netflix just two days before this announcement, that's why I immediately remembered which movie this banana phone was featured in upon hearing about it.

So enough of that and let's talk what's new on this 2018 version of Nokia 8110. First off, it will come in either black or yellow variant and is now able to be connected to the internet, thanks to its 4G support. The overall look of the phone has been updated to be more appealing and modern without completely losing its original forms - the banana-like curve (hence the moniker) and the keypad slider which can still be used to answer and end a call by, you guess, sliding. Similar formula they did with the Nokia 3310 2017.

While we can somehow classify this Nokia 8810 4G as a smartphone as it still works like one in many ways, but it does not have access to Google Play. However, HMD said it has its own app store and from there you can download custom apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Search, Facebook, Twitter and, of course, the legendary Snake game.

Through the phone's 4G connectivity support, you can also access and sync your emails, contacts, and calendar with Outlook and GMail in addition to some of the apps mentioned above. And yes, you can also make VoLTE calls with this one.

Specs wise, this handset will be running on a mobile OS called KaiOS which is a custom operating system based on Firefox OS. On the inside are the Qualcomm 205 mobile processor partnered with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. In addition to the 4G LTE supports, it will also be available with dual SIM functionality in some markets.

The battery capacity is pegged at 1500mAh and the company promises this Nokia 8810 4G to last up to 17 days on standby mode and offer up to 9 days of talktime.

Nokia 8110 4G specs:
  • 2.4-inch QVGA display
  • Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage
  • 2MP rear camera
  • Kai OS
  • 4G LTE
  • Dual SIM (in some markets)
  • Traditional Black, Banana Yellow
  • 79 Euros
The Nokia 8810 4G will be available starting in May for 79 Euros or about Php5,000. Since the Nokia 3310 and the 4G variants both made to the Philippine market in 2017, we are also very positive that this too will be released here in the coming weeks or months.
